As part of the important reshuffle, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office, The Union Council of Ministers was expanded on Tuesday with the induction of 19 new Ministers of State and the change of portfolio for many existing ministers. The more significant highlight of the reshuffle however is the change of office for Smriti Irani.

Smriti Irani is no more the country’s Education Minister. Ms Irani has been moved out of the Human Resource Development or HRD ministry and Prakash Javadekar, promoted to cabinet rank, will hold the portfolio now.

Ms Irani, during her two-year tenure in HRD attracted several controversies and this shift is being speculated to play a key role for the minister in Uttar Pradesh, where elections that the BJP sees as a must-win will be held early next year. While many experts are also hinting at the Rohith Vemula suicide, to be one of the key reasons for her shift of office.

This appointment came at a time when the government has just announced an incentive package for the textile industry. The minister and her office now have a big role to play regarding the right implementation of the package.

We hope she revives the Textile sector to nurture its full potential and may her role in her new portfolio play a deciding factor in erasing the confusion that is being played in people’s mind of whether this is a demotion or a promotion for the minister?
