Réard, the first Bikini brand resurfaces

Réard, known as the inventor of the first bikini in history, recently announced the relaunch of the brand. The brand kicks off with an updated, limited edition “newspaper print” bikini online and in stores during the cruise collection for Fall 2016. This year is certainly special, as Bikini turns 70 this year.

‘Performance, innovation, French heritage and savoir-faire’ are the few new defined principles on which the new Réard model will be based on.

It was back in 1946, that Louis Réard, a French engineer and visionary, launched a revolutionary invention that would change the way women portrayed themselves to the world. He named the two-piece bathing attire “BIKINI” after a South Pacific atoll, which had been a test site for the atomic bomb. Mr Réard wanted the women who wore his minuscule design to cause a similar reaction on beaches around the world.

On July 5th 1946, he presented the very first bikinis at the Piscine Molitor in Paris during a swimwear défilé. Réard’s bikini’ success was nothing short of a storm. Women wanted freedom and equality and the bikini became a symbol of this new woman: strong, liberated and independent. Bikini soon became a symbol of elegance, and the Réard woman had that quintessentially French quality: she was CHIC.

After a great success in the 50s and in the 60s, Réard sadly vanished from the intimate apparel sector due to an absence of heir post their successful journey until the 60s. But yes! they mark their rebirth and are back with a successful metamorphosis this 2016.

To honour the 70 years of Bikini, much recently at the Mode City Lyon, in partnership with the City of Lyon, the Metropolis of Lyon, and GL Events, Eurovet an original program of events for exhibitors, buyers, visitors, and the general public was organised. The show unveiled the Bikini from various stages of development through an exhibition that showcased Bikinis from the 50s right through the 70s and specially showcased the movie edition of Bikinis and the special ones worn by the celebrities and an exclusive gallery dedicated to Brigitte Bardot and her unique Bikini wardrobe.

The Réard fit is definitely going to be the talking point soon after their launch and we can bet that the world will again witness a Bikini storm with the re-entry of the brand.
