You might not consider lingerie to be seasonal but trust me, lingerie too like the rest of the ready-to-wear world goes through various trend cycles. Coming to Spring Summer 2020, this season’s lingerie collection is full of fresh tones, nature-inspired textures, floral and abstract prints, new bra shapes and lots and lots of sheer laces. Based on trend forecasts, we bring to you, different lingerie styles and stories bursting with new and exciting designs from all over the world.
Lingerie as Outerwear
Runways are a source of inspiration from where clothes and styles adopted by the richest in society eventually trickle down and influence the rest of the population. Speaking in lingerie terms, Spring 2020 runways were all about wearing lingerie as outerwear. Famous high-fashion designers proved on the runway how corsets should be worn over and not under your clothes (also one of the recent Deepika Padukone’s movie promotion look) and how wearing your lacy teddy at lunch is nothing but a fashion statement.
Vera Wang’s goth-tinged collection presented in New York featured several layered bias-cut slip dresses and sheer bustier worn loose and unfastened over structured pieces. Australian designer Dion Lee presented sculpted bras, harnesses and garter waist belts paired with flesh-toned tops and fluid pants. Charlotte Knowles’ warm-weather range presented in London highlighted 90s inspired push up balconettes whereas in Milan, Ermanno Scervino brought delicate, lace nighties on the runway with leopard-print blazers. Dolce & Gabbana showcased a range of sheer black separates that wouldn’t go wrong at an evening party or in the bedroom while Gucci presented lacy slip dresses with high slits and panty-revealing chiffon skirts.
Hop Lun which is the leading international fashion lingerie and swimwear company also paints the same picture for SS20 lingerie and swimwear.
According to them, SS19 runway trend continues in force with blurred lines between Lingerie and Outerwear. Soft Set Triangle Bralette, Straight Line Bandeau dominate across runway. Satin Cami, Bustier and Slip dress are worn to be seen.
Pastel and nature-inspired hues with a touch of boldness
Bold contrast in pastel hues makes a luxurious and a feminine combo. Brands get playful with colour with dual tone finishes. According to UK based manufacturers of accessories and trims Brooklyn Bow, Spring Summer 2020 is all about clean pastel shades, ultra-matte colour blocking contrast, combination of cobalt yellow and radical pastels. Rich pinks, old golds and vintage blue inspire a lavish, luxurious and sensual feel this season.
German lingerie brand, Dorina’s SS20 collection showcases similar pastel shades of pinks, ivory and corals, bright yellow, stormy greys and blues with bolts of neon yellow and electric pink, moody blacks and deep berry tones.
Cleo by Panache presents a fashion forward and confident collection which embodies fresh colour palette with pretty pinks and cool blues. Parfait’s SS20 lingerie collection too incorporated dusty pink, black and red hues.
SS20 Curve New York trade show witnessed many brands giving colorful and fun touch to their Spring Summer collections. Yellow was the show stopper this season with several brands such as Gossard, Lejaby, Aubade, Empreinte incorporating this vivid shade in their collections. The Aubade Beauté Sublime range featured the asymmetrical trend with this fashion colorway, called Rose baisé/Jaune doré. This particular range includes pieces that are easy to mix and match with some solids and prints.
Along with the bright yellow hues, variations in Blue and Green and traces of Deep Red, which are usually used in Fall Winter season were found in both lingerie and swimwear for SS20 Curve New York.
Lejaby created this beautiful high apex bra with gorgeous embroidery. It appears that SS20 is a lot about nature and getting back to connecting with it and yourself. The ‘Scantily Encounter’ is even more striking in the teal and gold colorway.
Wacoal’s SS20 color palette this season is also rooted in nature. They are a blend of colours that are relatable, comfortable and full of tones that can be easily combined. Colours taken from natural materials – earthy, baked hues that are both dynamic and energizing, juxtaposed with more saturated ones such as the blush and red tones you see.
80’s influenced prints
Spring Summer 2020 features fun prints inspired from the 80s such as floral, tropical and animal prints. Seems like Miranda Priestly of Devil Meets Prada is always correct when she says, “Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking!” Runway witnessed brands such as Agent Provocateur, Fleur de Mal and Savage X Fenty bring leopard, animal prints to the fore. Skin prints with contrasting fabrics reflect a youthful and creative attitude.
Panache’s SS20 collection featured Taylor and Zoe which consisted of the striking snake, abstract animal and traditional pastel floral prints for a fashion forward feel. Dorina Lingerie incorporated forest inspired tropical, leafy prints and tangles of vine embellishments for SS20 collection. Curvy Kate presented a rather fun and unique print of lips and faces in vibrant colours for lingerie in Curve New York SS20 trade show.
Sheer fabrics and Boho laces
Sheer means more than nothing. SS20 is all about seductive styles and textures using light laces, mesh pattern and super fine cotton fabric to create an almost naked look and comfortable everyday pieces. Other than sheer, dotted tulle fabrics also covered huge limelight in SS20 for both outer and lingerie trend. Brands such as Eberjey, For Love & Lemon, Le Petit Trou have incorporated these trend in their SS20 collection and have created beautiful seductive and elegant pieces.
On the runway, we saw collections featuring sheer fabric and boho laces by various high-fashion designers and brands such as Paloma Castle, Else Lingerie, Etam, Henriette, Fleur du Mal, Yasmine, Icone and many others.
Another fabric that has gained popularity this summer is embroidered laces. Lace fabric provides that elegant, classy and sexy look to any garment that it attaches to. This season the pattern of laces is even more diverse. There are a lot of leaves/palm pattern in laces, and embroideries. Along with tropical embroideries, there are large ranges of laces which introduces a Bohemian feel with a softer lace and an open design.
Panache’s SS20 collection features three new styles made with gorgeous laces and sheer fabrics. Imogen features a mesh cradle and an ornate lace design for a lighter feel, The Alexandra is a vertical seam three-piece sheer balconette with detailed cradle while Cleo features smooth finish with lace and moulded cups.
The Dorina SS20 lingerie collection draws inspiration from nature matched with the brand’s commitment to sustainability and environment. It features styles such as Forbidden Fruit made with lace and recycled mesh, Monsoon which features leafy prints, hibiscus lace, tangles of vine embellishment and graphic mesh, Sandstorm features a mirage of shimmery mélange and satins mixed with delicate marbled finishes of ivory lace and translucent recycled mesh, Botanical is a romantic garden party featuring vintage lace, net and jacquard satin textures with floral laces, eco-friendly organic cottons and translucent dot mesh finishes and Oxygen features natural textures in soft dot meshes and two-tone laces.
Vanessa from Parfait’s SS20 collection features delicate range with sheer, enchanted lace and soft mesh. Wacoal’s SS20 collections are all about laces exuding a sense of luxury. They consist of different types of laces such as guipure-look lace, Helenca floral lace, decorative all-stretch lace, stretch floral lace and cross style lace.
